Arizona law does not set a single day-count deadline for registering your car after moving here. Instead, the obligation attaches the moment you become a "resident" for vehicle-registration purposes — and that can happen immediately upon certain events, not just after a waiting period.

You are treated as a resident for registration and operation of motor vehicles as soon as any one of the following is true :

- You accept employment in Arizona or engage in a trade, profession or occupation here (other than seasonal agricultural work, or temporary seasonal work of not more than three months if your home state has a similar exception) .
- You place children in an Arizona public school without paying nonresident tuition .
- You declare Arizona residency to obtain resident rates on a state license or tuition at a publicly funded educational institution .
- You register to vote in Arizona .
- You remain in Arizona for an aggregate period of seven months or more during a calendar year, regardless of your domicile .

Once you are a resident, the exception that lets you drive on your out-of-state plates no longer applies: a vehicle may be operated on Arizona highways without Arizona registration only if it is properly registered in the state or country where its owner is a resident . Relatedly, a resident may not operate a vehicle owned by a nonresident that is primarily under the resident's control for more than seven months unless it has been registered with the department .

Note that certain people are excluded from the resident definition even if they work here — for example, qualifying out-of-state students enrolled with seven or more semester hours, certain nonresident daily commuters, and certain nonresident owners of vehicles registered in adjoining states near the border .
